Changes to Paternity and Adoption Leave. As from 8th March 2024, there are legislative changes employers need to be aware of. The purpose of which is to provide fathers or partners with greater flexibility in when to take paternity leave.
Fathers or partners do not have to take their statutory two weeks’ paternity leave or adoption leave in one block.
They can split their leave into two one week blocks. Leave can be taken at any time within the first year of birth rather than within the first eight weeks after birth.
This applies to children whose expected week of birth begins after 6th April 2024.
Notice Period for Paternity and Adoption Leave
Fathers or partners need to give 28 days’ notice of their intended paternity leave in place of the former four months’ notice.
If they wish to amend the start of their paternity leave they can do so, informing their employer as soon as reasonably possible.
Paternity Pay
No changes. Employees who have more than 26 weeks’ service qualify for statutory paternity pay.
