At Cheviot HQ, our motto is “Happy Tribe – Thriving Business”. After all, a business is only as successful as it’s people right?

Here are 5 tips to improve employee engagement:

  • Show employees that they are valued
  • Demonstrate appreciation
  • Listen to their views and act
  • Promote an inclusive workplace
  • Respect a work/life balance

Some things will always be important to employees. Things like a fair and decent wage, opportunities for learning and progression, and job security. However, in such a competitive marketplace vying for top talent, these in themselves are not enough.

Candidates expect more from an employer. They expect opportunities to work flexibly, a genuine commitment to promoting equality and diversity in the workplace and an employer who actively supports mental wellbeing.

This might seem like quite a wish list but in reality, any employer can offer this, it just takes a bit of understanding and commitment.

Once you have attracted the right candidates, you then need to give them a positive onboarding experience and then ensure that they stay engaged enough to stay with you for the long haul.

Value employees and demonstrate appreciation

You don’t need to pay big bonuses or sign up to fancy reward programmes. A small token of appreciation, even a “thank you” note, can make all the difference. Recognition that a particular employee has really made a difference can mean the world to them.

Ask for opinions

Senior leaders and managers don’t always know best. That’s why you should always strive to hire experts in the field, and seek their views and act accordingly. The added advantage is that employees will feel as if they can make a valued contribution and they are part of the bigger picture.

Inclusive Workplace

Promoting equalities and diversity shouldn’t be a “tick box” policy borne out of the Black Lives Matter movement. It isn’t all about the statistics of who you employ. It’s about embracing the differences of all your employees and ensuring everyone feels welcome. Different backgrounds, different view points can contribute massively to innovation, creativity and doing things more efficiently.

Better Work/life balance

This doesn’t mean that you need to commit to new fangled practices like unlimited annual leave or the four day working week but a respect that employees have personal lives too. Employees bring their whole selves to work. Managers will do well to share an interest in their lives outside of work and encourage them to leave early for that all important school play.
