The Employment Rights Act: what changes in 2027 and what to do now
The biggest shake-up of employment law in a generation lands in 2027. In 45 minutes, I'll take you through what's changing, when, and the practical steps to take now, in plain English.
2027 at a glance
These are the changes confirmed so far. We'll cover what each one means for you and what to put in place.
Unfair dismissal after 6 months
The qualifying period drops from two years to six months, and the cap on unfair dismissal compensation goes. Employers also need to tell staff about their right to join a union.
Fire and rehire
Dismissing people to force through changes to their contract becomes automatically unfair in most cases.
Bereavement leave and redundancies
A new right to bereavement leave, including pregnancy loss, and collective redundancy numbers counted across the whole business.
NDAs
Clauses that stop people speaking up about harassment or discrimination will no longer be enforceable.
Flexible working
Turning down a request will need a clear, reasonable business reason, and pregnant employees get stronger protection.
Zero-hours contracts
Guaranteed hours and pay for cancelled shifts are on the way. No date yet, and we'll tell you what we know.
